COLUMBUS, Ohio — It’s a rough day for Ohio State men’s basketball as sophomore forward Kaleb Wesson has been suspended by head coach Chris Holtmann for a violation of team rules, per a university release.
There has been no timetable set on the suspension of Wesson, but it was noted in the official release that he would be returning at some point this season.
“As much as we can, we’re trying to keep it a private matter,” Holtmann said in his regularly scheduled press conference on Friday. “Obviously, there are some things and some expectations that [Kaleb] needs to meet and needs to follow through on, and he’ll do that. I’m confident that he will do that, and then we’ll take it from there.”
Holtmann also said that he is following athletic department policies in the suspension of Wesson and that it will probably be a collective decision between Holtmann and the athletic department on when Wesson will be allowed to return to the team.
This is a huge blow for a Buckeye squad that is desperately struggling to make it back to the NCAA Tournament. Losing Wesson – who leads the team in both scoring (14.6 PPG) and rebounding (6.7 RPG) – dramatically impacts Ohio State, who still have a rough final three games of the regular season with games at No. 14 Purdue, at Northwestern and vs. No. 19 Wisconsin.
The Buckeyes will be without the services of Wesson for at least one game as the team prepares to travel to West Lafayette tomorrow to take on No. 14 Purdue without the centerpiece of their squad.
Tip-off this Saturday, March 2nd between the Buckeyes and Boilermakers is set for 2:00pm ET and the game will be televised on ESPN.
