REPORT: Georgia QB Justin Fields Interested In Transferring To Ohio State

Ohio State may not have a QB commit in their 2019 recruiting class after Dwan Mathis flipped his commitment to Georgia on Wednesday, but that all may not matter as Georgia quarterback Justin Fields is reportedly interested in transferring to Ohio State, according to ESPN’s Mark Schlabach.

Fields, who was the No. 2 overall prospect in the 2018 recruiting class according to 247 Sports, is reportedly unsatisfied with his role at Georgia as he is currently the backup to Jake Fromm, who led the Bulldogs to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game last season.

With Fromm still having at least one year left before he can forgo his remaining eligibility for the NFL Draft, Fields has entered the NCAA transfer portal and is seeking a new school.

“I think he’s looking at his options,” Smart said Wednesday. “Let me say this about Justin: Justin is competing extremely hard. He’s in the meeting rooms; he’s rolling and going with the twos. His information to us is he’s looking at his options, which is what you do. You go into the [NCAA transfer] portal, which we all know he’s in. That’s the extent of it, and that’s the conversation we’ve had.”

According to the report by Schlabach, Justin Fields is interested in Ohio State as his main transfer preference as current Buckeyes QB Dwayne Haskins is expected to forgo his remaining eligibility and enter the 2019 NFL Draft following the Rose Bowl Game.

Schlabach’s report goes on to say that Fields is expected to apply for a hardship waiver from the NCAA, which, if granted, would make him eligible to play immediately in the 2019 season.

If Dwayne Haskins were to leave for the NFL Draft, that would leave just three scholarships QBs on the Ohio State roster — Tate Martell, Matthew Baldwin and Chris Chugunov.

Ryan Day refused to comment on the rumors surrounding Ohio State and Justin Fields on Wednesday afternoon in his Early Signing Day press conference, but the head coach-in-waiting did say he would like to have four quarterbacks on the roster. When asked about if he has interest in bringing in grad transfers though, Day responded, “We’ll always look at all the options. Whatever we think can help our roster.”

Many were expecting Tate Martell to get the starting job should Haskins bolt for the NFL with even Matthew Baldwin having a chance to win the starting job, but if Ohio State were to bring in Justin Fields, that would be a huge boost at the quarterback position and solidify Ryan Day’s status as an elite recruiter who can bring in top-tier talent like Urban Meyer could.
