Big Ten Teleconference: Urban Meyer Previews Michigan State

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer hopped on the weekly Big Ten coaches teleconference on Tuesday afternoon to preview the Buckeyes’ matchup with Michigan State this Saturday.

Here are the points Meyer made in his entire eight-minute portion of the teleconference:

  • Meyer said that Brendon White and Shaun Wade will both play at the safety spot opposite of Jordan Fuller but who starts will be determined by practice this week.  Despite Isaiah Pryor returning this week from injury, he is not expected to start.
  • Meyer said of the Ohio State defense: “Even though we are giving up yards, we are getting better.”  He said he’ll know more about his defense after playing Michigan State this weekend.
  • On Michigan State’s defense, Meyer called them a “very good defense”.  Specified how good they are up front as MSU is the top-ranked run defense in the country.
  • Meyer said the running backs and offensive line were the reason Ohio State had so much success offensively against Nebraska.  He said they will face a much tougher test against Michigan State.
  • Urban Meyer on offensive lineman Wyatt Davis: “He’s going to have a fine career here.  He’s one of our most improved players.  He’s always had the talent, but now he’s a finisher.”
  • Meyer said quarterback Tate Martell has been “frustrated” but “positive” after not playing in any of the past five games.  Meyer also said that there are ongoing conversations about how to get Martell on the field and that he is an “elite competitor”.
  • Meyer on tight end Jeremy Ruckert: “He’s much improved and we’re hoping to get him more involved as well.”
  • Meyer on playing road games in the Big Ten: “Every stadium we walk into, you better strap it up and go.”  Meyer said he believes the Big Ten is, from top to bottom, one of the best conferences in the country

Ohio State will take on Michigan State this Saturday, November 10th at noon ET at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Michigan.  The game will be televised on FOX.
